Mutual Manager brings Ty Birkett onboard for next phase of growth

Sydney, January 31: Regis Mutual Management Limited Australia (Regis Australia) has announced the appointment of Ty Birkett as Chief Executive Officer, effective January 2019. Regis Australia acts as Mutual Manager for Unimutual Limited – its largest customer, an asset and risk protection provider to Australia’s university, higher education, and research institutions – and Ty will also be CEO of Unimutual.

Ty, who brings a quarter century of experience in reinsurance, insurance, superannuation, and consulting, says it is the difference inherent in the business model that primarily attracted him to the role.

“After decades in large, profit-driven organisations, the opportunity to work for a mutual – where, through its very nature, all stakeholder interests are aligned – was very attractive.”

“All strategies and goals are purely focused on generating and preserving benefits for members, and this precision of purpose – and the freedom it offers – holds great appeal. Personally, it also offers the opportunity to be integrally involved across the entirety of an organisation, rather than having a view restricted to component parts.”

Ty’s experience includes advising, developing and transacting a wide range of insurance and reinsurance solutions, as well as building teams both locally and across Asia Pacific. Most recently, Ty was a Managing Director at Willis Re where he worked for 13 years, after previous senior roles at Swiss Re and Aon Re. Ty’s experience includes working with a number of mutuals in Australia and New Zealand, including Unimutual, and he has considerable first-hand experience of the benefits of a member-focused approach to risk management.

Ty said: “I look forward to adding my experience to that of the existing strong and experienced team, and working together to take Unimutual successfully through its next phase of development.”

Unimutual currently comprises 56 members, including 26 of Australia’s universities, and many research and teaching institutes and associated organisations. Owned and controlled by these members, it has worked to protect their people, assets, and reputations through arranging tailored risk protection cover and managing risk, for nearly thirty years.

Ty succeeds Gerald Ewing, who has been CEO of Regis Australia and Unimutual for more than ten years, and was one of the founding Directors of both Regis Australia and the parent Regis Mutual Management Limited. Going forwards, Gerald will focus on assisting with the strategic growth of Regis in his capacity as a Director of Regis in Australia and the UK.

Gerald said: “It’s been an honour to work with the team and with members and see the mutual thrive. I very much look forward to working with Ty through this transition period and beyond. He has my support and commitment and is already known to the membership and the Board, having been involved with Unimutual for a number of years.

“Ty’s knowledge of the business and membership, as well as his qualifications from the wider industry, make him ideally suited to the role.”

Martin Griffith, Chairman of Unimutual, added: “Ty brings both a broad and deep knowledge from his career so far, particularly in successfully addressing the opportunities and challenges that various organisations face. We look forward to working with him to take Unimutual from strength to strength. We’d like to thank Gerald for his many exemplary years of service building the mutual to what it is today, and for his continued involvement as a Director of Regis Australia.”
